FROM THE BiG SCREEN TO FiSH AND CHiPS

The Empire Picture House opened in 1921, owned by the Rothwell Empire Company. It entertained local audiences as an independent cinema until 1964, before reopening as a bingo hall in 1967 and later becoming home to Mike’s Carpets.

In 1995, the building began a new chapter as a pioneering drive-through fish and chip takeaway. Its opening attracted national attention, including a feature on The Big Breakfast for the number of fish and chip portions served in an hour.

PROUD TO BE PART OF OUTWOOD

The Empire joined the Wetherby Whaler family in 2018, becoming our sixth Yorkshire location and complementing our existing Wakefield restaurant and takeaway.

More than 100 years after first opening its doors, this much-loved landmark continues to serve the local community. Whether you’re picking up a family favourite or stopping by for a treat, we look forward to welcoming you.
